Our Local Heroes

‘Our Local Heroes’ is a graded reader educational resource pack for teenage English language learners designed by Argentine and British undergraduates. This resource brings to life influential members of the local Argentine community, highlighting the accomplishments of five inspirational men and women. The pack also includes an interactive ‘Murder Mystery’ activity at two levels of English language proficiency, combining Anglo-Argentine cultural elements, set during Charles Darwin’s journeys in Argentina.

A distinctive aspect of this pack is the strong focus on interdisciplinarity, with activities in creative writing, history, literature, drama, citizenship, intercultural education and language learning, crafting connections between geology, palaeontology, the arts and the humanities.

Argentine trainee teachers acted as researchers and writers of the original manuscripts, and the British students acted as peer reviewers, commenting on, discussing and providing feedback on the original writing. The students wrote these stories in a carefully graded and accessible language for learners of English as a foreign language.
