1978 World Cup

The 1978 Football World Cup (hosted by Argentina) and Dictatorship Project aimed to facilitate intercultural and citizenship experience in the foreign language classroom for future teachers and translators of English at Universidad Nacional de La Plata and Spanish Honours undergraduates at the University of East Anglia. The project challenged students to analyse and understand the power of the media in constructing stereotypical representations of the World Cup, as well as other sports events, and hiding the killings and torture that were taking place at the time in Argentina. Students raised awareness in society by designing artistic artefacts (brochures, leaflets) and engaging in civic participation locally.
